Position: Associate/Senior Associate Landmark Group Litigation Case
Location: Brazil (Relocation Role for a Minimum of 12 Plus Months)

In July 2022, the firm secured a landmark, unanimous judgment from the Court of Appeal that allows over 800,000 victims of the Mariana Dam disaster, Brazil’s worst-ever environmental disaster, to seek redress against the world's largest mining company, BHP, in the Courts of England and Wales.
Pogust Goodhead is a globally recognised law firm renowned for our expertise in managing high-profile group litigation cases. Currently, we are on the lookout for 5 exceptionally talented Associates and Senior Associates to become part of our dynamic team on a temporary contract. This unique chance offers the opportunity to relocate to Brazil.
As part of this role, you will have the opportunity to become a pivotal figure in one of the most substantial group litigation cases globally, advocating for our clients' rights and interests. Your exceptional legal expertise, strategic mindset, and meticulous attention to detail will be vital in formulating and executing effective litigation strategies. You will also have the opportunity to work on several intricate and complex cases such as, including Haider, Orange Juice, and Maceió.
Requirements
Key Responsibilities:
- Managing large, complex, and contentious litigations, including multi-jurisdictional disputes in a fast-paced environment.
- Collaborating closely with partners and lawyers to deliver work of exceptionally high standards.
- Advising on case strategy aligned with the client's interests.
- Developing and nurturing relationships with external counsel, expert witnesses, clients, collaborating foreign lawyers, financial partners, and other external stakeholders.
- Supervising and providing mentorship and training to junior associates and trainees.
- Contributing to Pogust Goodhead's business development efforts, including enhancing the firm's visibility through participation in marketing activities and contributing to the firm's publications.
- Assisting the firm in achieving its professional objectives.
Qualifications:
Essential
- Degree educated (UK), ideally equivalent to a 1st or a high 2.1.
- 2-5+ years PQE or equivalent, with a significant portion of experience gained in English amp; Welsh litigation practice.
- Strong technical skills with a proven track record in complex English litigation.
- Exceptional analytical skills, enabling you to understand client needs and adapt optimal case strategies.
- Excellent knowledge of English civil procedure rules and managing proceedings in English courts.
- Meticulous attention to detail and commitment to consistently delivering high-quality work.
- Strong organisational skills, file management, and time/record keeping.
- Effective communication skills, including the ability to work calmly under pressure.
- Empathy and passion for the clients we represent.
Desirable
- Previous experience in pro bono or social justice/human rights work.
- Proficiency in Portuguese.
- International driver's license.
